Alegria

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

The history of Alegria started in the year 1920’s under the governance of the mother town Mainit. It was founded by the people who migrated from the municipality of Bacuag. Alegria was originally known as Sitio Anahaw located near the shore of lake Mainit and the river bank of Magtiaco River, one of the major tributaries of the said lake. The Sitio was always over flowed during rainy season and this caused the early inhabitants to move to higher ground and safer place southward near the provincial boundary which they called it later “Alegria”.

The name Alegria derived from the Spanish word “alegre” which means “lively” or “masadya” in Cebuano. Judge Sixto Olga, who happened to pass the night in the place, gave this name. Judge Olga advised the populace to change the name “Anahaw” to “Alegria”. Few years later Alegria became an independent municipality and officially separated from the town of Mainit by virtue of the Republic Act 5239 dated June 15.1968. The late Tomas V. Cosca was the first Mayor through an appointment. Today Alegria is inhabited by different groups of people coming from places as far as luzon, Visayas, and Southern Mindanao. It is a place whose people have different backgrounds and lifestyles. Among the many dialects, Surigaonon is the most common.
